How to peel beans using a blender

To peel beans using a blender is a life saver, it is so unbelievably easy, you will ask, ‘what is the catch’  No catch and there is no compromise in taste or texture. There are certain Nigerian dishes that need peeled bean for their preparation e.g moi moi, gbegiri and akara. Some types of beans are easier to skin than others.

The blender is better suited for small quantities of beans, not that it can’t handle bulk, but you will need to patiently skin your beans little at a time. You can also peel beans manually or with a food processor.

How to peel beans using a blender

Pick beans to remove any grit. Put in a bowl and add enough water to cover it, leave for 5 minutes for the skin to loosen.

Pour some of the beans into the blender, add enough water to cover the beans.

Blend for 5 seconds or pulse 2 or 3 times, you will notice the skin sloughing off. Pour out into a bowl.

Add more beans and water. The quantity of beans for each blending will depend on the capacity of your blender. When you have peeled all the beans of their skin, add more water, you will notice most of the skin will be on top of the beans.

Strain the skin into a sieve.

Add more water stir gently and strain into the sieve. keep straining until most of the skin has been strained off.

Rinse and use for your recipe.
