St. Lawrence market

St. Lawrence Market Toronto

St. Lawrence market Toronto, is located on Front street east, Toronto Canada. It is over 200 years old (1803) and was ranked as the world’s best food market by National Geographic in its book “Food Journies Of A Lifetime”.

It is made up of three main buildings: The South Market, the North Market and St. Lawrence Hall.

The south market, a two-level brick building, is the main market and it opens from Tuesday through Saturday while the north market which is a tent, is the farmers market and opens on Saturdays and a flea market which opens on Sundays. I only had enough time to visit the south market but will surely visit the North Market and the art gallery next time I am in Toronto.

St. Lawrence market Toronto is very clean, bright and spacious with plenty of dining areas both inside and outside with street musicians playing. There are parking lots nearby and street parking all at a cost.

With about 120 vendors, there is such a wide selection of everything including coffee, bread, meat, seafood, fresh produce, nuts, perogies, gourmet sauces, cheeses, maple syrup, pastries, flowers, truffles, caviar etc.

There are larger markets than St. Lawrence market but the variety and quantity of produce here is amazing. There is a good multicultural mix of vendors selling food products from around the world.

Some of the vendors are passionate with excellent customer service while some are aloof and won’t even look up when you get to their stall.

The bulk food market has so much variety, I felt like jumping into the bags of pistachio nuts.

There are a lot of choices for vegetarians too.

St. Lawrence market Toronto is a place where a foodie will love to pitch a tent and spend weeks sampling, cooking etc.

Some of our haul from St. Lawrence Market Toronto

When it comes to cooked food you are spoilt for choice, eventually, I opted for battered calamari and fries with a dip and slaw while my son got grilled octopus with fries, a dip and a salad.
